India and Sweden Launch Seven Steel and Cement Decarbonisation Projects.

India and Sweden have launched seven joint projects aimed at reducing carbon emissions in the steel and cement sectors, with financial support from India’s Department of Science and Technology and the Swedish Energy Agency.

The initiatives are part of the LeadIT industry transition partnership and involve major Indian companies such as Tata Steel, JK Cement, Ambuja Cements, Jindal Steel and Power, and Prism Johnson, collaborating with Swedish technology firms Cemvision, Kanthal, and Swerim. Prestigious Indian institutes, including IIT Bombay, IIT-ISM Dhanbad, IIT Bhubaneswar, and IIT Hyderabad, are also participating in the projects.

The projects will carry out pre-pilot feasibility studies on innovative technologies, including the use of hydrogen in steel rotary kilns, recycling steel slag for green cement production, and AI-based optimisation of concrete mix designs. Other initiatives will explore converting blast furnace carbon dioxide into carbon monoxide for reuse and evaluating electric heating methods for steel production.
