"Maha Metro opens bidding for the Ramwadi–Wagholi elevated corridor and six-lane road project."

The next phase of Metro expansion in the city is set to gather pace, with the Maharashtra Metro Rail Corporation Limited (Maha Metro) inviting bids for two major infrastructure works along the Ramwadi–Wagholi corridor. The tenders cover the construction of a Metro viaduct and a six-lane elevated road beneath it, both of which are planned to be executed simultaneously to minimise disruption during construction.

The Ramwadi–Wagholi Metro line is a key component of Maha Metro’s Phase-2 expansion. The corridor spans 11.6 km and includes 11 stations. In the first phase of execution, Maha Metro has invited bids for a 4.8-km viaduct from Ramwadi to Tuljabhavani Chowk, covering four Metro stations—Vimannagar, Somnathnagar, Kharadi Bypass and Tuljabhavani—along with a nearly equal stretch of elevated road.

The project is particularly significant for commuters along Nagar Road, as the first phase covers a heavily congested stretch from Ramwadi up to the beginning of the Wagholi area. According to the bid documents, construction of the 4.8-km Metro viaduct and the 4.7-km elevated road is expected to be completed within 42 months of commencement. The scope of work also includes the construction of solid ramps for the elevated road, which is proposed as a six-lane facility extending up to Shikrapur.

The Ramwadi–Wagholi elevated Metro line was sanctioned in June 2025, with the total project cost estimated at ₹3,626.2 crore.

A Maha Metro official said the tendering process marks an initial step and that actual groundwork will take a few more months to begin due to technical and procedural formalities. The corporation is expected to hold a pre-bid meeting for interested agencies shortly, with around a month allotted for online submission of bids. The tender deadline is scheduled for the first week of March.

Commuters using Nagar Road have stressed the need for timely execution of both the Metro viaduct and the elevated road. Regular users of the stretch said delays could worsen existing traffic congestion, particularly during peak evening hours, and urged authorities to adhere strictly to timelines.

Some residents have also suggested that Maha Metro execute the entire 11.6-km Ramwadi–Wagholi line in a single phase rather than splitting the work, to avoid prolonged construction and delays. They pointed out that the current tender covers only a 4.8-km stretch, leaving parts of Wagholi outside the first phase.

Meanwhile, Maha Metro officials said a separate study is underway to examine the feasibility of extending Metro services towards Lohegaon airport.
