Narendra Modi will inaugurate Micron Technology’s state-of-the-art Assembly, Testing, Marking and Packaging (ATMP) facility in Sanand, Gujarat, on February 28, marking a significant milestone in India’s semiconductor manufacturing ambitions.
The plant, located near Ahmedabad, was initially expected to begin production by late 2024 but is now set to roll out high-performance memory and storage chips tailored for artificial intelligence (AI) and advanced computing applications.
Operated by Micron Semiconductor Technology India Pvt. Ltd., the facility has attracted an investment of ₹22,516 crore. According to an official release from the Gujarat government, the project is expected to generate around 5,000 direct jobs, including roles for Divyang (specially-abled) citizens as operators and technicians. At present, about 2,000 team members are engaged in preparing the plant for commercial production.
The Sanand ATMP plant will manufacture DRAM and NAND products, including solid-state drives (SSDs), for global markets. These components are critical for AI systems, which rely on high-speed memory and storage to process data in real time.
Sanjay Mehrotra, Chairman, President and CEO of Micron Technology, said memory and storage technologies are central to modern innovation, particularly in the AI sector. He noted that as AI applications deliver faster and more sophisticated responses, demand for advanced memory solutions continues to grow.
