Nashik Civic Body Gets State Nod for ₹300 Crore Water Supply Upgrade.

The Nashik Municipal Corporation (NMC) has secured crucial technical approval from the state government's apex committee for its comprehensive ₹300 crore water supply improvement project. This significant green light will now enable the civic body to finalize the tender process and appoint a contractor, initiating work on this vital infrastructure upgrade.

The project, designed to bolster Nashik's water distribution network, is being implemented under the central government's Atal Mission for Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation (AMRUT) scheme. The NMC will receive 50 percent of the total funding from the Centre, with the remaining half to be self-financed.

Comprising six distinct works, a primary objective of this initiative is to drastically reduce Non-Revenue Water (NRW) – water that is produced and lost before it reaches the customer – from the current alarming rate of 45 percent to less than 20 percent upon completion.

An NMC official, speaking to The Times of India, confirmed that the tender process for the project has already been completed and a contractor finalized. "But after the technical approval of state govt, the work order is now to be given to the contractor concerned following the approval of the standing committee of the NMC. The proposal in this connection is soon to be tabled during the meeting of the standing committee that is to be held next week," the official stated.

Among the six key components of the project, a ₹95.20 crore allocation is dedicated to replacing existing water distribution pipelines that transport water from pumping stations to filtration plants, and then purified water from filtration plants to elevated tanks.

Additionally, old water distribution pipelines in various parts of the city will be replaced at a cost of ₹90.30 crore. "We will replace the old water distribution pipelines in all the six divisions, including 70 per cent works to be carried out in four divisions — Panchavati, Cidco, Satpur, and Nashik East divisions — where water distribution pipelines were laid down around 20-30 years ago," the official elaborated.

Furthermore, the NMC plans to lay new water distribution pipelines in the city's rapidly developing areas, including Adgaon, Makhmalabad, Pathardi, and New Indira Nagar. Approximately ₹89 crore will be spent on this expansion to cater to growing urban demands.
