NBCC bags Rs. 2,000-crore African order

State-owned construction company NBCC (India) Ltdwill soon build Mahatma Gandhi Convention Centres (MGCCs) in nine African nations.

The Rs. 2,000 crore order will see the firm construct high-capacity convention centres in Niger, Uganda, Malawi, Zambia, Liberia, Gambia, Burkino Faso, Togo and Gabon.

“Such overseas projects will go a long way in establishing NBCC as a formidable PMC (project management consultant) overseas as well,” said Anoop Kumar Mittal, Chairman-cum-Managing Director, NBCC.

The objective to build convention centres in overseas locations is also to enable Indian engineers and other employees posted there to get acquainted with modern construction technologies.

In December 2015, at the third India-Africa Forum Summit (IAFS), India had offered African nations a concessional credit of $10 billion over five years. They also got a grant assistance of $600 million to create capacity-building institutions and develop infrastructure, public transport, clean energy, irrigation, agriculture and manufacturing capacity.

Recently, NBCC secured projects in Mauritius, which includes the construction of a new Rs. 250-crore Supreme Court building and 956 social housing units costing Rs. 300 crore.
