Reliance Industries and DP World have introduced an integrated rail service connecting RIL’s Jamnagar plant in Gujarat to DP World’s inland container depot (ICD) in Ahmedabad and the Mundra Port. The initiative aims to reduce road transport, enabling the movement of 1,260 tonnes of cargo in a single rail shipment, according to an official release on Friday.
The new logistics solution shifts petrochemical product transport from road to rail, cutting carbon emissions and improving operational efficiency. Previously, the Mundra-Jamnagar-Mundra route required approximately 700 km of road transport per container. With the new service, the Ahmedabad-Jamnagar-Mundra route—also around 700 km—has been converted to rail transport.
Ganesh Raj, Global Chief Operating Officer of DP World Marine Services, highlighted the benefits of the initiative, stating, “By leveraging our multimodal assets and expertise, we have delivered a tailored, cost-effective alternative to road transport that enhances supply chain reliability, streamlines operations, and reduces environmental impact.”
Ravikumar Nair, Head of SCM Operations at Reliance Industries - Petchem, noted that the transition to rail has significantly improved sustainability efforts. “DP World’s innovative approach has provided us with a logistics solution that addresses critical operational needs while advancing our sustainability objectives. The shift from road to rail has streamlined our operations, reduced carbon emissions, and eliminated 45 road trailer movements per trip,” he said.
The new rail service underscores the growing focus on sustainable and efficient logistics solutions in India's industrial supply chain.
