Indian Railways is on a mission to become the world’s largest "Green Railways," and the Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) is making significant strides toward this goal by fast-tracking electrification projects on un-electrified Broad-Gauge routes. This effort is part of the broader aim to achieve net-zero carbon emissions and 100% electrification across the rail network.
As stated by Kapinjal Kishore Sharma, Chief Public Relations Officer of NFR, the railway zone has successfully electrified 2,070.52 Route Kilometers (RKMs), which represents 64% of its total network of 4,260.52 RKMs. So far, only 1,524.71 RKMs of tracks across the eight northeastern states have been electrified, with Assam leading the way at 1,353.231 RKMs, followed by Tripura at 151.59 RKMs and minor sections in Manipur, Meghalaya, and Nagaland.
The electrification efforts are being carried out in collaboration with IRCON India, RITES, and NFR's construction teams. This initiative is poised to enhance train transport in the northeastern region, transforming it into a greener, more efficient, and faster transportation system.
Transitioning to electric power will significantly reduce carbon emissions and decrease the reliance on crude oil imports, which have foreign currency implications. Moreover, increased traffic frequency is expected to improve train speed and punctuality, while mitigating delays associated with traction changes. The overall environmental benefits of this electrification initiative align with Indian Railways’ commitment to sustainable and eco-friendly operations.
