Oil India Targets 180,000 BPD Capacity for Numaligarh Refinery by 2027
Oil India Ltd. has announced plans to increase the capacity of its Numaligarh Refinery to 180,000 barrels per day (BPD) by 2027, marking a significant expansion for the facility. The refinery's expansion is part of a broader strategy that includes investing 250 billion rupees ($3 billion) by 2030 across various projects, including clean energy assets.
The expansion includes two major projects, both on track for completion by December 2025. Once operational, the expanded refinery will process approximately 110,000 BPD of crude oil. Additionally, Oil India is establishing a biorefinery at Numaligarh with a capacity of 50,000 tons per year to produce ethanol from bamboo.
Ethanol production at the Assam biorefinery is expected to commence by the end of September. The refinery will continue to supply fuel to the northeastern region of India and will also export diesel to Bangladesh through a pipeline with a capacity of 1 million tons per year. Despite ongoing political tensions in the region, there have been no disruptions to diesel supplies to Bangladesh.
Furthermore, Oil India holds stakes in two upstream oil projects in Russia, Vankorneft and Tass-Yuryakh. However, approximately $250 million in dividends remains in the Moscow branch of an Indian bank, pending repatriation.
