"ONGC initiates its first Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) pilot at Gujarat’s Gandhar field."
State-owned Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC) is planning to store captured carbon dioxide in depleted wells at its Gandhar oilfield in Gujarat, marking the company’s first full-scale Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) pilot project and a significant step in its decarbonisation efforts.
According to officials, the pilot will involve the use of two abandoned onshore wells, where approximately 100 tonnes of carbon dioxide per day will be injected into subsurface hydrocarbon reservoirs.
The carbon dioxide will be captured from nearby industrial facilities in the Dahej region, as well as from ONGC’s own Hazira plant. It will then be transported to the Gandhar oilfield for underground injection, preventing the greenhouse gas from being released into the atmosphere.
The project will also assess the potential of using carbon dioxide for enhanced oil recovery, exploring ways to convert an environmental liability into a productive resource, officials said.
