Prime Minister Narendra Modi will visit West Bengal and Assam on December 20 and 21 to inaugurate and lay foundation stones for major infrastructure projects across highways, aviation, and fertiliser production, marking a significant push in regional development and connectivity.
On December 20, Modi will be in West Bengal’s Nadia district, where he will inaugurate and lay the foundation stone for national highway projects worth approximately ₹3,200 crore. He is scheduled to inaugurate the 66.7-km four-laning of the Barajaguli–Krishnanagar section of National Highway-34 and lay the foundation stone for the 17.6-km four-laning of the Barasat–Barajaguli section of NH-34 in North 24 Parganas district. The government said these projects will improve connectivity between Kolkata and Siliguri, reduce travel time by around two hours, ease traffic congestion, and strengthen trade and tourism links with neighbouring districts and countries.
Later on December 20, the Prime Minister will travel to Guwahati, Assam, to inaugurate the new terminal building of Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport. Spread over nearly 1.4 lakh square metres, the integrated terminal is designed to handle up to 1.3 crore passengers annually and includes upgrades to the runway, airfield systems, aprons, and taxiways. The terminal’s design incorporates Assam’s cultural and ecological motifs, with locally sourced bamboo used extensively.
On the morning of December 21, PM Modi will pay tribute to martyrs of the Assam Movement at Swahid Smarak Kshetra in Boragaon, Guwahati. He will then travel to Namrup in Dibrugarh district to perform the bhoomi pujan for a brownfield ammonia-urea fertiliser project of Assam Valley Fertiliser and Chemical Company Limited, with an estimated investment of over ₹10,600 crore. The government said the project will help meet fertiliser demand in Assam and neighbouring states, reduce import dependence, and generate employment. Modi is scheduled to address a gathering at the site following the ceremony.
These visits underscore the government’s focus on enhancing connectivity, industrial capacity, and regional economic growth in eastern India.
