Residents moot alternatives to projects on ECR, OMR.

With land acquisition for the widening of East Coast Road (ECR) proceeding slowly, especially on the stretch from Thiruvanmiyur to Akkarai, traffic experts and residents are suggesting the government undertake the construction of an elevated highway instead of the proposed six-laning.

“This elevated highway could take off on LB Road near the telephone exchange, where the road is wide enough, and it could land beyond Neelankarai. This six-km-long, four-lane elevated corridor could take the traffic and allow local residents to use the service lanes,” said an expert on the city’s traffic.

The cost of the work would amount to Rs. 400 - 500 crore, equivalent to what the government is proposing at present, he added.
