"RRP Electronics' Semiconductor Plant Granted 'Mega Project' Status in Maharashtra"
RRP Electronics has been granted 'mega project' status by the Maharashtra state government for its ambitious semiconductor initiative, which involves an investment of ₹24,000 crore. The project, the first of its kind in the state, was recently approved by the state cabinet.
The development will unfold in two phases. Initially, RRP Electronics will establish an Outsourced Semiconductor Assembly and Testing (OSAT) facility spanning 40,000 sq. ft. at its modern site in Mahape, with operations set to begin by September. The second phase will see the expansion of production lines at a new plant in MIDC, Taloja, expected to be operational within two years.
RRP Electronics has partnered with HMT Zurich, a leading design company, to support semiconductor production at the Mahape facility. The OSAT facility will source wafers from manufacturers and produce semiconductor chips for various industries, including automotive, power, and electronics.
The project is set to create 4,000 jobs in Maharashtra, contributing significantly to the state's economic growth and technological advancement. Rajendra Chodankar, Chairman of RRP Electronics, highlighted that the OSAT facility will help reduce India’s dependence on imported semiconductor chips from Taiwan and South Korea by at least 25 percent.
While semiconductor production capabilities currently exist in Chennai and Gujarat, this project will be the first of its kind in Maharashtra. Chodankar also mentioned that RRP Electronics will initially supply semiconductor chips to HMT Zurich and is in discussions with other major industry players for additional orders.
