An investment of Rs. 50,000 crore will be allocated to enhance infrastructure along national waterways over the next five years, as announced in an official statement on Friday. The investment proposals were revealed during the Inland Waterways Development Council (IWDC) meeting held in Kohora, Kaziranga.
The IWDC, organized by the Inland Waterways Authority of India (IWAI), the nodal agency for waterways development under the Ministry of Ports, Shipping & Waterways (MoPSW), is focused on upgrading infrastructure along national waterways.
A key highlight of the meeting was the introduction of the Riverine Community Development Scheme, aimed at improving the socio-economic well-being of coastal communities by developing supporting infrastructure.
Ports, Shipping, and Waterways Minister Sarbananda Sonowal, speaking at the event, announced plans to launch 1,000 green vessels over the next five years to promote green shipping along inland waterways. Building on the success of Kochi’s Water Metro project, Sonowal revealed that the initiative would be expanded to 15 cities across the country, including Guwahati. Additionally, new ship repair facilities will be set up along national waterways.
Sonowal also emphasized that more than Rs 23,000 crore would be allocated for the development of new national waterways and green shipping projects.
Established in 2023, the IWDC aims to maximize the economic potential of India’s inland water bodies through coordinated efforts between the central and state governments, fostering cooperative federalism.
