Tata Motors has achieved a significant milestone by becoming the first bus manufacturer in India to receive the Central Motor Vehicles Rules (CMVR) type approval certificate for its Hydrogen Fuel Cell powered (FCEV) buses. The country's largest commercial vehicle manufacturer successfully obtained approval for its Tata Starbus 4/12 FCEV model, including its various configurations.
The Automotive Research Association of India (ARA), an autonomous body affiliated with the Ministry of Heavy Industries, conducted the testing and stated, “Tata Motors is the first original equipment manufacturer (OEM) in India to receive Type Approval certificate with full compliance for all notified provisions of CMVR.”
FCEV technology, utilizing hydrogen fuel cells for electricity generation, offers advantages such as zero tailpipe emissions, an extended range, rapid refueling, and high efficiency. This makes FCEVs an appealing option for public transportation compared to traditional gasoline or electric vehicles.
While FCEV technology is still in its early stages, it holds substantial potential for the future of transportation. As hydrogen infrastructure expands and FCEV costs decrease, they may become increasingly viable for consumers.
Tata Motors has already secured orders for these buses, winning a tender from Indian Oil Corporation Limited (IOCL) in June 2021 for 15 FCEV buses. In September, Tata Motors delivered two buses to IOCL as part of their Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), with specific route approvals obtained from the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways for research and development purposes.
Expressing enthusiasm, a Tata Motors spokesperson stated, “We are delighted to have received the first CMVR type approval certificate for the application of Fuel Cell Technology. This certification furthers Tata Motors' pioneering legacy of innovation and our deep-rooted commitment to nation building, sustainability, and carbon neutrality.”
In addition to FCEVs, Tata Motors offers a range of mobility solutions powered by alternate fuel technologies, including battery-electric, hybrid, compressed natural gas (CNG), liquefied natural gas (LNG), and Hydrogen internal combustion engine (ICE).
Tata Motors has demonstrated robust sales performance in 2023, with a cumulative figure of 24,885 buses. Diesel-powered buses constituted the majority at 19,719 units, while sales also included 2,143 petrol-fueled buses, 2,024 CNG-powered buses, and 999 electric buses, showcasing the company's commitment to a diverse and sustainable mobility portfolio.
