Tata Steel Accelerates Green Steel Future with UK EAF Construction Starting July.
Tata Steel is poised to begin construction on its ambitious low-carbon Electric Arc Furnace (EAF)-based steelmaking project in the United Kingdom as early as July 2025. The homegrown steel giant anticipates the facility will be operational by 2027, marking a significant step in its decarbonization efforts.
Top company officials, including CEO & MD T.V. Narendran and Executive Director & CFO Koushik Chatterjee, confirmed in Tata Steel's Annual Report for FY2024-25 that all necessary approvals have been secured for the $1.5 billion project at Port Talbot.
"We are now transitioning to decarbonised and state-of-the-art EAF-based steelmaking by FY2027-28, supported by 500 million pounds in the UK Government funding," the company's management stated in the report. This investment underscores Tata Steel's commitment to sustainable steel production and aligns with global efforts to reduce carbon emissions within the industry.
The EAF technology is a key component of this transition, allowing for steel production with a significantly lower carbon footprint compared to traditional blast furnace methods. The project is expected to play a crucial role in the UK's green industrial revolution and Tata Steel's long-term environmental objectives.
