"Telangana Fast-tracks Establishment of Bhadradri and Yadadri Thermal Power Stations"
Telangana Genco is ramping up efforts to expedite the establishment of the 1,080 MW Yadadri thermal power station and the 4,000 MW ultra mega Yadadri thermal power station, amidst challenges posed by the nationwide lockdown and the exodus of migrant workers due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
The lockdown and the subsequent movement restrictions have significantly impacted the project timelines, prompting Telangana Genco to devise strategies for timely completion. The implementation of the Bhadradri project, handled by state-owned BHEL as the EPC contractor, has particularly suffered due to the departure of migrant workers.
As a consequence, the scheduled commissioning of two units of the Bhadradri thermal power plant by the end of May faces delays, while the completion of the remaining two units by year-end remains uncertain.
D Prabhakar Rao, Chairman of TS Transco and TS Genco, has taken stock of the situation and urged BHEL to bolster its workforce and expedite project activities to meet the original timelines. Telangana Genco is keen on adhering to strict deadlines to ensure ample power capacity to cater to the anticipated surge in demand, especially with over 25 lakh bore wells and numerous power-intensive lift irrigation projects operational during the monsoon season.
With the commencement of kharif sowing and the operation of pumps for irrigation schemes, including the massive Kaleshwaram project, the state anticipates a significant spike in power demand. However, the reliance on migrant laborers, many of whom have left or are reluctant to return due to the pandemic, poses challenges for contractors managing large-scale projects.
The situation underscores the complexities faced by the construction sector amid the ongoing crisis, necessitating innovative solutions to mitigate disruptions and ensure the timely completion of critical infrastructure projects.
