Tiger Airways to launch flights

Singapore: Tiger Airways will start flying to Xiamen in southern China from October with fares starting from 49.99 Singapore dollars (US$32.83) for a one-way trip, the Singapore budget carrier said Monday.

The Xiamen service will add to Tiger Airways’ destinations in southern China as the carrier focuses its expansion plans on the area, said Tony Davis, chief executive of Tiger Airways Group.

‘That will be our fifth city that we serve in China,’ Davis told reporters. Tiger already flies to Shenzhen, Haikou, Macau and Guangzhou in southern China.

During a media briefing, Davis also said the carrier was enjoying ‘strong growth momentum’ with passenger expansion of 46.3 per cent year on year in the first quarter ended June.

He declined to say if Tiger was profitable but said gross revenues were up 84 per cent in the June quarter from a year ago.
‘We are maintaining a very strong growth momentum... so we are very, very, very happy with our financial performance at the moment,’ said Davis.
‘I am not going to tell you if we are profitable or not. You will have to guess,’ he said.

Tiger Airways, which is 49 per cent owned by national carrier Singapore Airlines, has been expanding its network in the Asia Pacific region in recent months.
