Tiruchi: The Golden Rock Central Railway Workshops has become a truly global institution by capturing the export market and is all set for further development. Work on modernising the workshop at a cost of Rs 90 crore will be completed within a few years, the General Manager of Southern Railway, Mr Rakesh Chopra, said here recently.
The Railway Board has nominated the GOC Workshops as a nodal agency for overhauling high horsepower locomotives. A separate project has been sanctioned at an estimate of Rs 16 crore to develop facilities for handling the General Motors (GM) loco sub assemblies. It would involve acquisition of about Rs 10 crore worth of mechanical equipment and Rs 6 crore of civil engineering works.
Mr Chopra laid the foundation stone for the civil engineering works of the project and also flagged off a couple of modified metre gauge locomotives to be exported to Tanzania. The ISO 14001 certificate, awarded by the QMS Certification Services, for environment management was presented to the workshop in his presence.
The Chief Mechanical Engineer, Southern Railway, Mr V. Carmelus, said the GOC has got the ISO 9002 certificate.
