Bangalore to get peripheral ring road project

Bangalore: Resolving to improve Bangalore's crumbling infrastructure, the government gave the go-ahead for the Rs 3,000 crore peripheral ring road (PRR) project which is geared for easing traffic congestion on the outskirts of the city, including the IT clusters in Electronic City and Whitefield.

The project, which has been lying in the cans for the last five years, has been taken up to send a positive signal to Bangaloreans on the infrastructure development front ahead of the Greater Bangalore City Corporation elections. The project had been mooted by the then chief minister S M Krishna.

Now, the PRR will be developed on the public-private partnership (PPP) model. The private partner for the project is yet to be finalised. The length of the road is 116 km and it will touch Sarjapura, Attibele, Anekal, Hoskote, Sulebele, Doddaballapur and Nelamangala.

The road will be 100 metres wide and will be a tolled stretch with a dedicated bus lane. In the first phase, 65 km will be built apart from the four-lane main road flanked by two service roads.

The median will be 12 metre wide and would be used as a buffer zone for widening the road in future in keeping with the increasing vehicle density. Speaking to reporters after the cabinet meeting, home minister V S Acharya said the Bangalore Development Agency will be the nodal agency to execute the project. In the first phase, construction will be taken up on 65 km and that would connect Tumkur Road, Bellary Road, Old Maras Road and Hosur Road.

The first phase will be completed within 30 months from the day of commencement of work.
