Bilfinger secures orders worth £350m for Hinkley Point C nuclear project in UK.

Bilfinger has been awarded two contracts worth £350m by EDF Energy for the £22.5bn Hinkley Point C nuclear power station being built in Somerset, South West England, UK.

The contracts involve the design, procurement, supplier management, fabrication and construction of pipework and specialist equipment for the Nuclear Steam Supply System (NSSS), which will transport the steam to drive the turbine generator.

Additionally, Bilfinger will be responsible for the design, supplier management, procurement and fabrication of pipework for the Balance of Nuclear Island (BNI), which will be placed at the heart of the nuclear plant.

Work will be carried out by Bilfinger UK, Bilfinger Engineering & Technologies Germany, and Bilfinger Peters Engineering France.

Bilfinger expects the two contracts to create 350 new jobs at its UK locations in Warrington, Humberside, Bristol and Somerset, with work scheduled to commence immediately.  

Hinkley Point C MEH programme director Simon Parsons said: “With the creation of hundreds of new jobs and training opportunities delivered by this contract, Hinkley Point C is helping to build Britain’s industrial capability and boosting jobs and skills.”

The 3,260MW Hinkley Point C power plant is being built on Somerset’s north coast on Bridgwater bay adjacent to the existing Hinkley Point A and B nuclear power plants.

Warrington North MP Charlotte Nichols said: “The Hinkley Point C project has already brought millions of pounds of investment into the Warrington North nuclear supply chain, and this latest announcement couldn’t come at a more vital time for Warrington or for the country, as we rise to meet the twin challenges of the climate emergency and the post-Coronavirus economic landscape.”

The project is being developed by NNB Generation Company (MNBG), a joint venture of EDF Energy (66.5%) and China General Power (33.5%).
