Sanjay Shirsat, the newly appointed chairman of the City and Industrial Development Corporation (CIDCO), announced on Tuesday that the Indian Air Force will conduct the first trial landing of a fighter jet at the Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMIA) on October 5. This significant event will take place in the presence of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, as part of the ongoing development of the airport's first runway.
Following an inspection of the runway's construction, Shirsat revealed that the state government aims to launch domestic flights from the airport by March 2025. His announcement comes just ahead of the anticipated schedule for the upcoming Maharashtra assembly elections, expected to be revealed by mid-October.
Shirsat indicated that the Prime Minister's attendance at the trial run underscores the MahaYuti government's commitment to advancing various infrastructure projects in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region, with a goal of boosting the region's economy from the current $140 billion to $300 billion by 2030.
Once operational, NMIA's two phases will accommodate approximately 20 million passengers annually. "After the domestic flights commence in March, the Adani Group and the CIDCO Board will plan to launch international flights from June using the same runway," Shirsat stated, highlighting the airport's potential impact on the development of the Mumbai Metropolitan Region and the state as a whole.
The NMIA will feature the capacity to park 350 aircraft simultaneously, with four interconnected passenger terminals, allowing for seamless internal travel between them. Additionally, Shirsat noted that the airport will be well-connected through the Atal Setu and metro rail systems.
Covering 1,160 hectares and located about 35 km from the existing Mumbai Airport, NMIA is projected to cost INR 16,700 crores. In August, the Airport Authority of India completed Instrument Landing System (ILS) testing to ensure the airport's operational readiness.
