"Gensol-Matrix Consortium to Construct India's First Green Hydrogen Steel Plant"
A consortium led by Gensol Engineering Limited and Matrix Gas & Renewables has been awarded the contract to build India’s first green hydrogen-powered steel plant, the companies announced on Monday. The ₹321 crore ($38.5 million) project will receive 50% of its capital expenditure from the Government of India as part of its support for green hydrogen initiatives.
The plant, one of three pilot projects under the National Green Hydrogen Mission, will have a daily production capacity of 50 tons and will use direct reduced iron (DRI) vertical shaft technology to convert iron ore into sponge iron. This method eliminates CO₂ emissions by substituting traditional fossil fuels with green hydrogen.
The consortium also includes IIT Bhubaneswar and Sweden’s Metsol AB. Matrix Gas & Renewables will oversee the project from land acquisition to commissioning. The plant is expected to set an example for small and medium-scale producers in regions such as Chhattisgarh and Odisha.
Gensol Engineering will leverage its expertise in renewable energy and EPC services to contribute to the project’s success. The initiative aligns with India’s National Green Hydrogen Mission, which aims to foster sustainable steel production and significantly reduce carbon emissions in the industrial sector.
