Ghazi Barotha Project increases Wapda hydel power
Lahore: The generation of 1,450 MW electricity from Ghazi Barotha Hydropower Project (GBHP) has greatly helped improving the ratio of hydel generation in the overall capacity of Wapda system. This was stated by Wapda Chairman Shakil Durrani during his visit to Ghazi Barotha Hydropower Project (GBHP).
Speaking on the occasion, he said that exploiting all indigenous resources of energy, particularly water and coal, is a must to produce electricity for meeting the its demand. He said that Wapda, after its bifurcation, is now focused towards construction of hydropower projects and water reservoirs.
The construction work on 969 MW Neelum-Jhelum Hydroelectric Project has already commenced, while 14 more projects with an accumulative generation capacity of 20,770 MW would be available from 2009 onwards for initiating construction work after the completion of feasibility studies.
These projects mainly include Bunji (5,400 MW), Dasu (4,000 MW), Kohala (1,100 MW), Spot Gah (610 MW) and Palas Valley (621 MW), he added. Tarbela Dam General Manager and GBHP Project Director Maqsood Shafique Qureshi said the GBHP with an average energy output of 6,600 Gwh, provided maximum electricity in the daily hours of peak demand.
