Amid rising demand for metro services, Hyderabad Airport Metro Limited (HAML) has initiated work on the city's first-ever model metro hub at Jubilee Bus Station (JBS) in Secunderabad. Set to be completed in two years, the state-of-the-art facility will feature the convergence of three metro lines and will span over 30 acres of both state and defence land.
The project, developed through a public-private partnership (PPP) model, aims to alleviate city congestion while creating a new urban center of activity. HAML Managing Director NVS Reddy emphasized that the hub will not only address transportation challenges but also set a global standard for metro systems, drawing comparisons to metro stations in Tokyo known for their passenger-centric features.
“We initially sought five acres of land, but with the Telangana Chief Minister's grand vision for the city's metro, we were encouraged to aim for up to 50 acres,” Reddy explained.
The design of the JBS transit hub includes multiple levels of functionality. The ground level will house metro stations and a revamped bus complex, while extensive cellar parking will be incorporated. The existing five-story JBS Parade Ground station, which currently accommodates the green line, has already demonstrated the potential for mixed-use development, with office spaces being actively utilized.
A key feature of the hub will be its architectural design, with three individual metro stations connected via skywalks. This differs from the approach at Ameerpet and Mahatma Gandhi Bus Station (MGBS), where multiple lines share a single structure. The new station, which will connect to Medchal, will be built alongside the JBS Parade Ground station, completing the triad of interconnected lines.
“The skywalks will ensure smooth passenger movement while maintaining operational efficiency,” Reddy noted. The blue and green line stations at JBS are already connected by skywalks, providing a ready framework for the integration of the third line.
Developed entirely through the PPP model, the JBS hub is expected to attract significant private investment, offering world-class infrastructure and amenities. “There won’t be any need to travel to western Hyderabad for premium shopping or dining,” Reddy added.
The hub will also feature extensive commercial development, including restaurants, malls, and office complexes. “JBS will transform into a vibrant center of activity,” Reddy stated, with plans for shopping areas, dining options, and modern co-working spaces to cater to urban professionals.
This ambitious project marks a significant shift in metro station design in India. With Delhi’s Kashmere Gate being the only other similar station, the integration of three metro lines with a bus station, combined with substantial commercial development, reflects a forward-thinking approach to transit-oriented urban development.
