Maharashtra’s Smart City Projects Near Completion, ₹1,555 Crore of Work Still Pending.
Maharashtra’s smart cities are nearing the final phase of their Smart Cities Mission (SCM) projects, with over 94 per cent of the sanctioned work completed. However, projects worth more than ₹1,555 crore are still pending, reflecting uneven progress across different cities and sectors.
Official data shows that Maharashtra’s eight smart cities—Aurangabad, Kalyan-Dombivli, Nagpur, Nashik, Pimpri-Chinchwad, Pune, Solapur, and Thane—were allocated 347 projects with a total outlay of ₹16,980 crore. Of these, 328 projects valued at ₹15,424.89 crore have been completed, while 19 projects involving ₹1,555.38 crore remain ongoing.
Launched in 2014, the Smart Cities Mission was an initiative by Prime Minister Narendra Modi to develop 100 smart cities across India, aiming to enhance urban infrastructure, improve quality of life, and promote sustainable development. Maharashtra’s cities have largely progressed under the scheme, but the pending projects underscore the need for accelerated implementation to fully realise the mission’s objectives.
