Solapur Poised to Become India’s Next Onion Hub Amid Maharashtra Policy Drive.

The Maharashtra government is moving to position Solapur as a central hub for onion trade, following recommendations from the state committee drafting the new onion policy. The committee has proposed establishing an onion terminal in Solapur to streamline trading and support farmers.

At a recent meeting in Solapur, chaired by Pasha Patel, president of the Agriculture Costs and Prices Commission, members discussed developing the terminal to bolster both domestic and international onion trade. The terminal is expected to provide modern facilities, including scientific storage systems aimed at reducing post-harvest losses and preventing damage.

Solapur, along with Lasalgaon in Nashik, already receives onion supplies from across Maharashtra, and its Agricultural Produce Market Committee (APMC) plays a vital role in pricing and trade. The proposed terminal is expected to consolidate all necessary facilities under one roof, enhancing efficiency and supporting farmers’ incomes.
