Oman opens new 64-bed coronavirus field hospital in Muscat.

Health officials in Oman have opened a temporary 64-bed field hospital in Muscat, which will be used to treat mild to moderate cases of Covid-19.

The facility, in the Al Amerat governorate, includes four beds to be used as an intensive care unit.

The hospital also contains all the supportive departments for the treatment and follow-up of Covid-19 such as emergency departments, intensive care, laboratories and sterilisation sites.

It has been created by the Oman Medical Association (OMA) through its Mu’afa initiative (Together for Oman) with the approval of the Ministry of Social Development and in coordination with the Ministry of Health (MoH).

Initially 40 health volunteers signed up for the project, but after two weeks, that number had grown to 100, with most working outside their normal hours.

Dr. Waleed Khalid al-Zedjali, president of OMA, said: "A technical team has been formed in cooperation with some of MoH’s health institutions to prepare all departments and corridors of the hospital to receive the cases of Covid-19 taking into account the protection of all health and administrative personnel, as well as the patients, in addition to developing regulations that apply all laws and regulations of the World Health Organisation and the Ministry of Health for the treatment of these cases.”

On Sunday, Oman announced 157 new cases of coronavirus and a further fatality at the hands of the Covid-19 virus.

The total number of confirmed cases in the Sultanate currently stands at 5,186, while the death toll has risen to 22.
