The government has allocated ₹5,421 crore to Punjab and ₹3,416 crore to Haryana in the Union Budget 2025-26 to enhance railway infrastructure, Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw announced on Monday.
Vaishnaw highlighted that this year's allocation for Punjab is 24 times higher than the ₹225 crore received between 2009 and 2014. Similarly, Haryana's allocation is 11 times higher than the ₹315 crore it received during the same period.
Amrit Station Development
As part of the railway modernization efforts, 30 Amrit stations are being developed in Punjab at a cost of ₹1,122 crore, while 34 stations in Haryana are undergoing redevelopment at a cost of ₹1,149 crore.
Key Stations in Punjab:
Abohar, Amritsar, Anandpur Sahib, Beas, Bathinda, Fazilka, Ferozepur, Hoshiarpur, Jalandhar Cantt, Mansa, Malerkotla, among others.
Ambala Cantt, Ambala City, Bahadurgarh, Ballabhgarh, Bhiwani Junction, Charkhi Dadri, Faridabad, Gohana, Hisar, Jind Junction, Karnal, Kurukshetra Junction, Mahendragarh, and others.
Safety and Infrastructure Enhancements
With a focus on safety, the Union Budget has allocated ₹1,16,000 crore for railway infrastructure upgrades nationwide. This includes extensive work on track renewal and the implementation of the KAVACH safety system.
Since 2014, Punjab has added 382 km of new railway tracks, surpassing the total rail network of the Philippines. In Haryana, 823 km of new tracks have been laid, almost equal to the railway network of the United Arab Emirates.
Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Railway Minister Vaishnaw for the substantial investment, emphasizing that it will significantly strengthen rail connectivity in the state.
Odisha Also Secures Significant Railway Investment
The Centre has allocated ₹10,599 crore for railway sector development in Odisha in the Union Budget for 2025-26. This marks a marginal increase from the ₹10,586 crore allocated in 2023-24. Over the past three years, Odisha has received more than ₹10,000 crore annually for railway expansion, contributing to a cumulative investment of ₹78,000 crore in the state.
Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi expressed gratitude for the allocation, stating that it would accelerate railway development and boost the state's economic growth. However, the opposition BJD criticized the BJP-led government for allegedly neglecting Odisha in the budget, pointing out that despite being a key revenue contributor to Indian Railways, the state received only a minor increase in funding compared to previous years.
Key Railway Developments in Odisha:
59 stations to be redeveloped with an investment of ₹2,379 crore, including Bhubaneswar, Cuttack, Puri, Sambalpur, and Rourkela.
1,898 km of rail line to be equipped with the KAVACH safety system, with tendering ongoing for 645 km.
522 rail flyovers and under-bridges constructed since 2014.
Six Vande Bharat trains operating in Odisha, connecting 17 districts with 25 unique stoppages.
Multi-tracking project between Kolkata and Chennai progressing rapidly, with significant work completed up to Bhadrak.
The East Coast Railway has reported significant advancements in Odisha’s railway network, stating that between 2014 and 2025, 186 km of new railway tracks will be laid—3.5 times more than the 53 km added in the previous period. The state has also achieved 100% railway electrification, with 1,516 km of tracks now electrified.
The Union government maintains that these railway infrastructure projects will improve connectivity, boost economic growth, and enhance passenger safety across the country.
