Qatar Railway project likely to be tendered in early 2012

Construction Week Online cited Mr Saad Al Mohannadi CEO of Qatar Railways Company as saying that work on Qatar’s rail network will now not start until the last quarter of 2012.

Recent reports suggested that work on the railway could start as early as the end of summer next year however Mr Saad Al Mohannadi said that the first phase of the project is likely to be tendered early in 2012 with work beginning in the Q4.

Senior sources linked to the Qatar Rail Alliance, reportedly said that work is likely to begin near Education City on the west side of Doha and comprises linking the locations of the stadia being constructed for the World Cup in 2022 and other parts of the city from where football fans would get proper connectivity to the venues.

The Phase II building rail links to Bahrain and Saudi Arabia will begin in 2022 in line with plans for a GCC rail network. A Phase III completing Qatar’s own network and linking to other regions in the GCC will begin in 2030
