Reliance to test run Jamnagar refinery soon

New Delhi: Reliance Industries (RIL) plans to start test runs from its new 29-million-tonne (mt) refinery being set up by Reliance Petroleum (RPL) in Jamnagar, Gujarat, soon.

The new refinery, which is adjacent to its existing 33-mt refinery, is coming up in a Special Economic Zone.

According to the company, it plans to commission it in phases.

Initially, the company plans to produce Euro-IV grade petrol and diesel and subsequently upgrade to Euro-V.

Petroleum products from the refinery will be mainly exported to the US and Europe.

RIL President (Refinery Business), Mr P. Raghavendran, speaking to mediapersons on the sidelines of the India Energy Conference here said, “We have promised that the refinery will be commissioned before December and we are on schedule. I cannot give you a specific date.”

Asked what would be the quantum of combined petrol and diesel production from the two refineries, he said, “The two together would produce 24 mt of diesel and 10 mt of petrol.”

On whether the slowdown in the US economy would have an adverse impact, he said the two refineries can market products all over the world.

“Petrol (gasoline) markets exist all over the world. The US is the biggest but there are other markets. Gasoline is required in Africa, West Asia and the Far East. We are looking at wherever there is a deficit,” he said.

The two refineries at Jamnagar will become the single largest source of jet fuel, petrol and diesel for global markets.
