"Sterling & Wilson Arm Partners with Spanish Firm to Manufacture Electrolysers in India"
Sterling & Wilson announced on Thursday a partnership between its subsidiary, Sterling Generators, and Spanish company Tecnicas Reunidas for the joint development of a 1 megawatt electric (MWe) hydrogen electrolyser in India.
The hydrogen electrolyser, a critical component in the production of green hydrogen, is scheduled to be operational by the final quarter of 2024 and has the potential to be scaled up to 10 MW, stated Sterling & Wilson.
Sanjay Jadhav, CEO of Sterling Generators, emphasized that this collaboration will bolster India's efforts in adopting green hydrogen, aligning with the country's ambitious renewable energy targets. He noted that leveraging India's abundant solar and wind resources to produce green hydrogen will provide a strategic advantage.
Hydrogen, being a universal, lightweight, and highly reactive fuel, holds significant promise for various industries. Electrolysis, the process of splitting water into hydrogen and oxygen using electricity, is facilitated by an electrolyser.
When the electricity used in electrolysis is sourced from renewable energy, the resulting hydrogen, termed green hydrogen, is produced without emitting carbon dioxide into the atmosphere. This makes electrolysis a promising avenue for carbon-free hydrogen production from renewable resources.
Joaquín Pérez de Ayala, Director of Energy Transition at Tecnicas Reunidas, expressed confidence that the partnership will contribute to the integration of green hydrogen into India's energy landscape. He highlighted the potential of green hydrogen to decarbonize challenging sectors such as heavy industry and transportation. Moreover, he emphasized the collaboration's role in fostering technical exchange and innovation between India and Spain, ultimately paving the way for a greener future.
