Trial runs on the Regional Rapid Transit System (RRTS) corridor between New Ashok Nagar and Sarai Kale Khan are set to commence by the end of April, officials confirmed. Sarai Kale Khan, the largest station on the Delhi-Ghaziabad-Meerut Namo Bharat corridor, is nearing completion and will serve as a major transit hub integrating multiple transport systems.
An official from the National Capital Region Transport Corporation (NCRTC), which is executing the project, stated, "Track work between New Ashok Nagar and Sarai Kale Khan is complete, and overhead electrical masts and cables for electric traction are in the final stages. The overhead electrical system will be energised soon."
Currently, Namo Bharat trains operate on a 55-km stretch of the corridor from New Ashok Nagar in Delhi to Meerut South, covering 11 stations. Three additional stations—Shatabdi Nagar, Begumpul, and Modipuram—are also under development.
Officials noted that trial runs are already underway from Meerut South to a section before Meerut Central. "Extensive trials are in progress in this section, and civil construction at all three upcoming stations is in the final stages, with finishing work being carried out at a rapid pace," said an official. Additionally, Meerut Metro, which will share infrastructure with Namo Bharat trains, has also begun trial runs between Meerut South and a section before the underground Meerut Central station.
With the corridor’s expansion, the RRTS project aims to enhance public transport accessibility and ease urban congestion, further integrating the capital region’s transit network.
