Delhi Public Works Department (PWD) Minister Parvesh Verma on Saturday inspected the ongoing drainage construction project on Rohtak Road, a key corridor connecting Haryana to Delhi. The project aims to address longstanding issues of road deterioration and drainage inefficiencies, which have led to frequent complaints from local residents.
The Delhi government recently transferred the responsibility for constructing the 18-kilometer stretch from Peeragarhi Chowk to Tikri Border to the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI), while PWD will oversee the drainage work.
The ₹115-crore drainage project is expected to be completed within 14 months. However, the stretch includes areas near three Delhi Metro stations and Indraprastha Gas Limited (IGL) pipelines, requiring multiple approvals. Verma directed officials to expedite the approval process to avoid delays.
"Delays in obtaining approvals increase costs. This must be prioritized so that work progresses without interruptions," Verma stated.
Criticizing previous administrations for neglecting Rohtak Road, Verma noted that residents frequently complained about the lack of government attention. He assured them that both PWD and the Flood Control Department are coordinating efforts to ensure efficient project execution.
Emphasizing quality control, Verma warned that any compromise in construction standards would lead to blacklisting of contractors and suspension of responsible officials.
The minister also highlighted that poor road conditions contribute to dust pollution and traffic congestion, vowing that the Delhi government is committed to developing long-lasting, high-quality infrastructure.
"My village, Mundka, where my father, former Chief Minister Sahib Singh Verma, was born, is nearby. Residents have long suffered due to the dust and poor road conditions. Now, with NHAI handling road construction and PWD managing drainage, this project will finally bring relief," Verma said.
March 15 marks the 82nd birth anniversary of Sahib Singh Verma, and the minister reaffirmed his commitment to ensuring that Delhi’s roads meet the highest standards.
