Mangalore SEZ to use treated water

Mangalore: Mangalore Special Economic Zone (MSEZ) will use 18 MGD (million gallons per day) of treated water from three sewage treatment plants in Mangalore, and thus minimise the use of fresh water in industrial units in the SEZ, according to Mr I.S.N. Prasad, Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of MSEZ Ltd.

He said MSEZ Ltd has an agreement with the Mangalore City Corporation to take the entire 18 MGD of treated water from sewage treatment plants in Mangalore.

“We will take entire 18 MGD from these plants and treat it further, before using it in the industries. This is one of endeavours to minimise the use of fresh water,” he said.

Nearly 70 pert cent of the total fresh water to be used in the MSEZ will be recycled, he added.

Dr H.C. Sharathchandra, Chairman of Karnataka State Pollution Control Board, said that lack of sewage treatment plants in the cities is the major problem now.

Only 40 per cent of Bangalore is covered by sewer network. Of this, only 40 per cent gets treated, he said.

Lakes, which are the efficient rainwater harvesting structures, should not be polluted and they should be conserved for the future, he said. Mr P. Tamilvanan, Chairman of New Mangalore Port Trust, spoke on the occasion.
