Rs1.73 bn to be invested on West Bank Bypass in Kashmir
Islamabad: Earthquake Reconstruction and Rehabilitation Authority (Erra) would construct 'West Bank Bypass' on western banks of Neelum and Jehlum rivers in Azad Kashmir, it was learnt on Sunday. 'The cost on the project is estimated at Rs1.73 billion and it consists a 5-km road including four intersections and three bridges,' Erra sources told.
The sources said that the project has been designed by Japanese civil engineering experts and also comprises Nalochi Bridge, which would be first of its kind in Pakistan with one central pillar and iron rods. 'The cost on 246 metre long Nalochi Bridge is estimated at Rs14.43 million,' the sources added.
As per project cost specifications, Japan's institution JPI would donate Rs1.5 billion for construction of the road while Pakistan government is liable to provide Rs20.6 million for acquisition of land and remaining financial resources would be allocated from Erra's budget.
Kohala-Muzaffarabad, Balakot-Muzaffarabad and Neelum Valley roads will be linked with the Western Bypass to ensure smooth flow of traffic between the cities.
'Meanwhile, bus stops and goods stations will also be shifted outside the AJK capital to restrict the entrance of heavy vehicles into city as these cause traffic problems,' sources said.
The Erra documents elaborate that National Highway Authority would supervise execution of the project while construction contract is scheduled to be awarded through international bidding.
'Central Development Working Party (CDWP) and Executive Committee of National Economic Council (ECNEC) have approved the plan and construction process is expected to kick off soon,' sources elaborated.
Meanwhile, Eastern Bypass is also on cards to be built on eastern banks of the Jehlum and Nelum rivers. These projects are part of New Muzaffarabad City Plan, which aims at long-term construction of the quake-hit AJK capital with estimated cost of around Rs50 to 60 billion.
