Simhadri Power Project Phase -II work begins

Visakhapatnam: Andhra Pradesh is doing remarkably well on the power front, with two credit rating agencies (Crisil and ICRA) having given the State the number one position in recent assessments, said the Union Power Minister, Mr Sushilkumar Shinde.

He was speaking at a function at the NTPC-Simhadri thermal power plant here on Sunday after inaugurating work on the second phase (two units of 500 MW each), in addition to the existing installed capacity of 1,000 MW, at a cost of Rs 5,000 crore.

Mr Shinde said the first phase of the thermal plant had been completed in a record time of 38 months and expressed the hope that the second phase would also be completed before schedule.

On the demand that 85 per cent of the 1,000 MW to be added to the plant’s capacity be allotted to Andhra Pradesh, voiced by the Chief Minister and the State Power Minister earlier in their speeches, the Union Minister promised that it would be considered sympathetically.

He said the NTPC had also a super thermal plant at Ramagundam in the State and it was generating 2,600 MW. After the completion of the Simhadri second phase, the total power generated in the State by the NTPC would go up to 4,600 MW.
