John Cockerill Wins India’s Largest Electrolyser Order from AM Green.

AM Green announced recently a strategic partnership with John Cockerill to supply 1.3 gigawatts (GW) of advanced pressurized alkaline electrolysers for a green hydrogen project at an existing facility in Kakinada, Andhra Pradesh. The plant, set to be India’s largest electrolyser order, will start production in the second half of 2026, following AM Green’s final investment decision (FID) in August 2024 for a one-million-tonne green ammonia project.

The facility, equipped with 1.3 GW of electrolysers, will operate in two phases, each providing 640 megawatts (MW) for green hydrogen production and subsequent conversion to green ammonia. This agreement includes the development of India’s largest electrolyser manufacturing plant with a 2 GW annual capacity, located in Kakinada, in alignment with India’s National Green Hydrogen Mission.

Anil Chalamalasetty, AM Green’s Group Chairman, highlighted that this collaboration strengthens India's role as a global leader in low-cost green molecules. “With this collaboration, we are advancing India’s green hydrogen goals and enabling decarbonization across industries like refining, shipping, fertilizers, power generation, and chemicals," Chalamalasetty stated.

The project’s green ammonia, compliant with EU RFNBO standards, will support AM Green’s target of achieving 5 million tonnes per annum (MTPA) of green ammonia by 2030, meeting demand in both India and OECD markets.

François Michel, CEO of John Cockerill, described the order as a major advancement for their hydrogen business. “Our advanced electrolysis technology will support the large-scale adoption of green hydrogen and its derivatives across the region and beyond,” he said.

John Cockerill's India President, Vivek Bhide, noted that the company aims to increase its footprint in India’s steel and hydrogen markets, already recognized as a key technology provider by major steel companies such as Tata Steel, JSW Steel, AM/NS India, and JSOL.

Supporting this collaboration, John Cockerill’s joint venture with Technip Energies, Rely, will oversee engineering, procurement, construction management, and commissioning (EPsCm) services for the facility. Additionally, Credendo Green Package conditions have been extended to this project for its sustainable impact.
