Kerala Likely to Invite Expression of Interest for Vypeen-Fort Kochi Undersea Tunnel.

The Kerala state government is expected to soon invite expressions of interest (EOI) for the construction of an undersea tunnel connecting Vypeen and Fort Kochi as part of the coastal highway project. This decision follows a feasibility report by K-Rail endorsing the project.

The ongoing coastal highway in Ernakulam district will stretch around 48 km, but the section between Vypeen and Fort Kochi currently requires a longer land route of approximately 16 km. The tunnel option, however, would reduce this distance to just 3 km, saving considerable time and cost.

Experts estimate the tunnel construction cost at around ₹2,762 crore. The project includes building two parallel tunnels to facilitate smooth two-way traffic flow, each with a 3-meter-wide service road and a 4-meter-wide highway. Dedicated lanes for vehicles, bicycles, and pedestrians are planned to ease traffic congestion in Kochi city.

The Vypeen-Fort Kochi undersea tunnel will be one of the first of its kind in India, running about 35 meters below sea level, designed as twin tubes to safely accommodate highway traffic under the shipping channel. This innovative infrastructure will enhance connectivity and reduce travel distances, aligned with the broader ₹6,500 crore coastal highway initiative.

Construction and project timelines will likely depend on land acquisition and funding approvals, but the project marks a significant step in Kerala's transportation infrastructure development.
