Lanka will supply electricity to families under threat

Colombo: The Ministry of Power and Energy said Thursday it will undertake a mega-power supply project to provide electricity to 30,000 families living in threatened villages in the island's North and East.

The cost is estimated at USD 25 million, sources said.

According to the Ministry, the Sri Lankan government has already met 79 per cent of the country's total electricity demand as of this year by utilizing a grant of USD 24 million provided by the Republic of China for electrification projects in Sri Lanka.

It is looking forward to meeting 85 per cent of the country's net electricity demand by the year 2010 under the 'Light to Village' development project.
