Vizhinjam International Port Set for Commissioning Next Month.
Vizhinjam International Port is on track for its official commissioning next month, with the state government expected to finalize the date soon. While most preparations are complete, authorities are fine-tuning operational procedures to enhance the efficiency of docking ships and handling containers.
Recent trials showcased the port’s growing capabilities, with three ships docked almost back-to-back and simultaneous berthing of two ships becoming routine. Current operations see the port receiving one ship every alternate day and handling an average of 2,000 containers daily.
“We are already operating at maximum capacity to meet current demand,” an official said, adding that the port handled 23 ships in October, with November’s numbers expected to surpass this.
The port has handled over 50 ships and nearly 1 lakh containers during trial operations since the mothership MV San Fernando’s arrival four and a half months ago. Currently, MV MSC Shristi and MV MSC Patnaree III are berthed at the port.
With yard work nearing completion, Vizhinjam is preparing to seamlessly transfer containers between ships, the port, and feeder vessels once fully operational. The official commissioning marks a significant milestone for the port, signaling its readiness to become a key hub in global maritime logistics.
